What’s A Startup?

A startup is an organization formed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model.

I just came across this definition of a startup by Steve Blank, and I think it is fantastic. Short and concise, yet getting across the key points, repeatable and scalable.

What do you think of the definition?

Joel, this is a solid materialistic definition. It may be a definition of a startup, but not necessarily a successful starup (even if they end up making money). I would modify "search for ... business model" to read "search for scalable and repeatable alignment of favorite activities of it's members with the needs of the market". That way, the founders truly succeed: they do what they love and get paid.

Thank you for your post, this is a fun topic to explore. I have started an exploration of my own here: http://zeroemployees.blogspot.com/, />and I would like to see if you have comments.

Hi Alexander, thanks for the comment :)

I love your re-definition to ensure people are doing what they love, and I agree that it's a very good idea to do that, but I am not convinced it is the only way to create a successful startup. Paul Graham just wrote on this topic, which I blogged about today - http://joelg.info/startup-ideas-4

Your blog looks really interesting, liking the topics so far :) You have a new subscriber ;)
